November 24: FINAL Soup party for artist21

On Saturday November 24th at 7pm, we will be hosting our FINAL talk and conversation at our gallery space in the Brewery (600 Moulton Ave, Suite 204 - link to map). We will be serving soup at 7pm, have a conversation with artist Stephanie Farr from 8pm-9pm, and then continue with more soup, drink and inspired conversation.

After six years at this lovely location, it’s time to move on. And it might be the last artist21 with soup for now…

BUT you can take home a piece of history! Thousands of cups of soup were served throughout the history of our soup parties. Reserve a historical bowl and spoon to take with you by making a donation ahead of time.

The Capgun Holdups

This is a fundraiser to help cover expenses and support future work, so your generous donation is much appreciated.

The event is free as always (BYOB), but there is only a limited amount of bowls available so make sure to reserve yours today!

Eventbrite - FINAL artist21 and Take your Bowl Home Fundraiser

In addition to our regular program we will also host a special appearance by the Capgun Holdups, made up of a southern gentleman and a dude from back east playing their particular brand of Americana; acoustic country blues, tinged with whiskey and honey…

As we are leaving this location, everything that is left behind Saturday will be for sale or up for grabs. Tons of books and fun stuff. Even some furniture. So don’t miss this unique opportunity!

 About Stephanie Farr:

Born in 1979 in Columbia, Missouri, Farr was raised the middle of three daughters.
In 1997, she began her studies at the University of Missouri where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a double Emphasis in Fiber Arts and Photography, and a Minor in Art History. There she worked under the tutelage of esteemed fiber artist, Dr. Jo Stealey, who exposed her to the techniques necessary to develop a strong multi-media studio practice through calculated exploration.

Upon completion of her undergraduate degree in 2001, Farr then immediately continued with post-baccalaureate work at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. Here she was the head of her class, receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award in the spring of 2003. Soon after, she parted ways to begin an internship with an established commercial photographer, which funneled her into the world of fashion photography and Hollywood. Over the next several years she worked both alone and as part of a studio. Eventually, the atmosphere she found herself in began to illuminate the subject that caused her to leave that world behind.

In the fall of 2006, she left Los Angeles on what became a cross-continent adventure, only bringing her right back to LA by May of 2007. However, while residing briefly in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen during part of that winter, the matriculation of her experiences became the genesis of her continual exploration beyond the photographic print. Maintaining a consistent and productive studio practice since that time allowed experimentation that has yielded a body of work acclaimed as both innovative and visually distinct. Farr’s work and processes have already begun to make waves among curators and collectors alike.

September 8: artist21 with Teale Hatheway

Teale HathewayOn Saturday September 8th at 7pm, we will be hosting a special talk and conversation at our gallery space in the Brewery (600 Moulton Ave, Suite 204 - link to map). We will be serving soup at 7pm, have a conversation with artist Teale Hatheway from 8pm-9pm, and then continue with more soup, drink and inspired conversation.

Artist Statement:
My paintings elicit conversation into the histories, and futures of our cities.  I am attracted to personal experiences of space and their effect, conscious or otherwise, on our human condition.

My painted compositions draw on the built environment as I compose abbreviated relationships which convey the soul of the site. The effects of bleach, ink, burning and metal leaf enhance the texture of the linen while the acrylic fields offer a smoother, more vibrant surface.  The variety of materials I employ compel an engagement with the surface of the painting by creating visual distinctions between coarseness and refinement.  My process is a relationship between the execution of formal ideas and concessions made to the natures of my chosen materials.

I know I have achieved my goal when the audience has been drawn to the work through form, color and texture, and has subsequently recognized its own relationship with the subject.

August 11: artist21 with Llyn Foulkes

On Saturday, August 11 at 7pm, we will be hosting a special talk and conversation at our gallery space in the Brewery (600 Moulton Ave, Suite 204 - link to map). We will be serving soup at 7pm, have a conversation with artist Llyn Foulkes from 8pm-9pm, and will feature a special performance by Llyn on his world famous “machine” at the end of the evening.

We are proud and excited to feature Llyn Foulkes, who has been called the Zelig of contemporary art. Over the past five decades he has been consistently inconsistent, confounding critics and galleries with dramatic changes of direction whenever it seemed he was about to be overtaken by popular acclaim. He’s also been consistently ahead of the curve.

He showed a year before Andy Warhol at the legendary Ferus Gallery in the mid-60′s and was heralded as an early master of Pop with his famous ‘Cow’ (a nicely rendered creature in blank space), anticipating Warhol’s bovine prints by three years. Among the artists with whom he emerged were John Baldessari, Wallace Berman, Robert Irwin and Ed Ruscha. Although he would probably scoff at the label, many admirers regard his musical performances as performance art.

His eclectic oeuvre includes intriguing meditations on the nature of photographic images, a light romance with nostalgic Americana, savage portraits reminiscent of Francis Bacon and scathing commentaries on the insidious nature of commercial pop culture — particularly the products of Disney (dead Mickey’s are strewn through recent works). And although he has zigged and zagged through the decades, an echo of Dada and a Duchampian playfulness inform much of his work (though certainly not in a manner that reveals any dreaded consistency)….see more http://www.llynfoulkes.com

The conversation will be ignited by storyteller, performance artist and writer Brenda Pertrakos.

A dynamo on the stage she takes no prisoners. Her tell it all approach has won over audiences in California, Chicago, New York, London, and Edinburgh. Her stories find the raw emotion and inspiration in our daily attempts at humanity.
With a compassionate heart, a darkly comic approach, and an ear for local dialect, Petrakos weaves your gut right into the fabric of her world.
She recently published her second book with Sybaritic Press, a graphic novel entitled Country Fixins (2011). Her first book, Stories From The Inside Edge (2007), featured a limited-edition companion CD with readings by Petrakos and actors and poets including John Burton, Jr., Diane Gaidry, Judy Holiday, and Stosh Machek.
Stories from the Edge, an evening of solo pieces from the book, premiered in May 2007, featuring the short film “Cop” which has since screened at Cinema Slam in Park City. With John Burton, Jr., Petrakos reworked the show into Inside Edge, and took it to the Festival Fringe Edinburgh 2007.
Welcome to Heaven, a feature screenplay she co-wrote with Joel Stein is currently in development.
She continues to co-host the venerable Los Angeles Friday night reading The Rapp Saloon.
With a background in stand-up and writing sketch comedy for Showtime, CBS and Fox, she volunteers her experience and time leading comedy improv workshops for at-risk youth.
